It comes as no surprise that during an economic down turn, people become more focused upon their homes. There are several reasons for this such as:

Those previously planning to sell there homes decide to make improvements instead.

The number of holidays spent at home increases, and people focus on home improvements to make that time more enjoyable.

People decide they need to sell their homes and downsize to make ends meet, so they make repairs to get top dollar.

Less money is spent on entertainment outside of the home, and the time spent at home is refocused to home improvements

Projects that were formerly put off are now taken on as ways to feel better about what and where people are in their lives.

More people find themselves working from home, and as such alterations must be made to their houses to accommodate this change.

Then there are multiple other reasons why, but I think you get the gist. People want to make improvements to their homes in a time like this. However, depending on where you live, there can be hurdles to overcome before you can even take action. If you are seeking to make some pretty decent sized alterations to your home, or even some not so large, you might be faced with a waiting period. It is critical that you identify what is required in your community before you begin to undertake your project. You need to find out what home improvement rules and regulations are in place, and follow the steps required to get approval to begin.

Some typical things you can expect to encounter are restrictions on building sheds, garages or extensions. In addition, you might need to apply formally to complete any of those, and that application can cost you not only time, but money too. Luckily, some government officials have recognised that the system in place is hindering people from making improvements, along with some other downsides to the scenario. For instance, if people are not working on their homes, then supplies from local companies are not being purchased. Also, builders, architects and trades people are not getting that work either.

The issue becomes striking the right balance between maintaining safety and keeping the buildings in the style and manner the authorities have established for the location. This includes concern for conservation of historical structures, and being fair to those living within the area in question. It appears that some government agencies are taking all of this into consideration, and making it easier for locals to make improvements to their houses without as much expense, or red tape.

Seems like it would have been the very first thing interior designers would have thought of, but the greatest thing in lighting is not ages old. Sure, very often a kitchen sink is located in front of a window, but that doesn’t necessarily mean even during daylight hours that those preparing food, and cleaning up in the kitchen will have enough of the natural light source to see what they are doing. Well, not as well as they should that is.

In the majority of kitchens the lighting is high above and tucked into the ceiling. Or it is placed directly over a center island, or even strips of it under upper cabinets. That is everyplace, but over the kitchen sink. We concentrate on the size of the sink, the features of it, the faucet design, those choices we consider of interest, but how can they be if you can see them? And that means spotlight them, whether it be with one, two or three lights, fix it with fixtures. We guarantee it will make a huge difference, for the better. Not to mention, if you loved all the choices you faced when you were reviewing sinks then you should revel in this one too.

So you spent all your time looking for living room furniture, and have little free time left to make any improvements to the walls. Don’t let this prohibit you from taking the time you do have available to make some improvement before that new coffee table and sofa are delivered.

Many people think if you can’t paint the walls then there is nothing that can be done to freshen things up. Incorrect, here are two ideas that will make a huge difference, but will take substantially less time than painting all the walls of a living room. First, just paint the trim and window frames in a color that contrasts with the one already on the walls. This will cause the eye to go to the pop of color instead of that on the walls. Not to mention, if you choose wisely, it could alter the whole feel of the room.

The second idea is to paint the ceiling, the place most people forget about. It is unfortunate that more people do not take advantage of this improvement, as it can have a very strong impact, especially if you use a high gloss paint. A glossy white, or a variation on white, will reflect your lighting source in a manner that will be most pleasing. Think of glowy ambient lighting.

Though you may not realize it, it is human nature to be drawn to places where we look good. For instance, if the lighting is warm and soft at a friend’s home, then we will be more inclined to spend time in that space. Thus, the lighting you have in the room, or rooms you entertain in could strongly influence whether people want to revisit. We all know how different a room can feel with harsh lighting, then it can with diffused cosy lighting.

This means you should be very cognizant of the type of light any fixtures, or light sources you purchase will give out. You want your guests to feel comfortable in the space, and two items that will make that happen are dimmer switches, and candles. However, some activities are not suitable for what may be considered romantic candlelight. The best way to combat this is by avoiding slender candles in sleek holders, and to go for chunky, or jumbo wide ones placed inside decorative pieces like hurricane lamps or oversized vases. Don’t ask me why, but apparently large candles grouped together implies more a of a group, and long stemmed singular ones lean toward the romantic.

Ingredients :

24 ounces gin of choice

4 ounces smooth vermouth

3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

As many strips of lemon zest as you like for decoration ( I use 3 lemons)

Instructions:

Mix everything but the zest in a chilled pitcher

Garnish glasses with the zest.

While we nearly always discuss furniture, or decorations for the house in this section, this time is different. We want to address the way to improve the way you design your meals. The French term for today’s topic is mise en place and will work well in any kitchen. But, thanks to the French for giving it such a swanky title.

The mise en place approach is to prepare all of the ingredients you will need to make the dish you will be working on. To do it properly, you need to measure, cut, and clean every last one of the ingredients required in the recipe. This will enable you to move forward at a faster pace, and identify that you have exactly what is essential, and any additions you might want to include. I personally am not aware of how many French individuals invoke this process, but it is a winner in our minds. Not to mention, if you are teaching kids how to cook, this will take them through the steps most efficiently.

Cable ties can make our everyday lives easier by allowing us to easily organise our electronic equipment and keep hazardous cables from becoming a shock or tripping hazard. A cable tie can be made of plastic, metal, or other material and can be used indefinitely. If you have an entertainment centre or electronics rooms with many components, keeping all those cables organised can become a chore. With each new device that is added, you have at least two more cables to keep organised. Cable ties allow you to bunch the cables or cords together in a way that makes the most sense to you, and you can then label them or do whatever is necessary to keep them from causing confusion when you want to move or unplug a device from your setup.

Your local DIY store or electronics department will be able to give you a large selection, letting you choose the type of cable tie that can best help you to stay organised at home. At the office, managing your IT department’s various use of networking devices is made easier by tying wires and cables together in an organised way that will make them easier to remember, and the space that can be saved will help your office staff to be more productive by best utilising that space. The fasteners are not easily undone, making it easy for your cables and wires to stay put after you have organised them in the way that you deem best.

As a convenient and inexpensive tool for keeping wires and cables in their place, plastic ties are the best solution. Whether you work in an office environment utilising many computers and printers, or your home office or entertainment centre is growing too large for you to keep the wires from tangling, plastic zip ties are an economical and sensible choice for helping your cables stay put and out of the way. Stainless steel and adhesive mount ties are also available, and these can be used in environments where plastic would not be able to stand up to the heat and humidity over the long term. Tie guns make it easy to achieve the correct length needed to bundle a large number of cables, and these and other accessories make it easy to put your zip ties to the best possible use with maximum efficiency.

DIY stores, department stores, electronics stores, and home improvement supply stores of all kinds will usually have zip ties in stock, as their multiple uses make them a much sought after commodity. Because they are small, they can become a choking hazard, so they should not be left within reach of small children. Once secured into place, they will be very difficult for children or pets to remove. When used to their best advantage, zip ties can save you hours of frustration when installing new equipment or unplugging existing equipment from the wall or television set. It’s always a good idea to have a few of these on hand, and they can be stored conveniently inside your tool box or supply drawer.

Having spent this past week working with a new client on the ways of Feng Shui, I have been harkening back to the time when I first became properly acquainted with the art form myself. I became so enthralled by the possibility of changing the flow of energy that I went further than I had initially intended, well actually a lot further. Luckily for me, and my eagerness there are things like next day delivery sofas, and decorators who are willing to burn the midnight oil. And even better is the fact that all these years later, the decorator and I still work together frequently, and I still sit on that sofa nightly.

It has been my experience since then, that there are two types of people when it comes to Feng Shui, those who want to master it immediately, and those who dabble. Now, I imagine having been the type to want to make changes asap it is only natural that I would be a proponent of this approach. Still, I recognise not everyone has the opportunity to work this way.

However, I must strongly object to this so called dabbling approach. And having put my own preferences, and techniques aside, I can see clearly how this could play out badly. As further support for my opposition, I have spoken to numerous other practitioners, and read articles that confirm the same.

If you do not fully understand Feng Shui and start to alter only certain things you could be impacting the balance of the space you are working on for the worse. So what is the compromise? My advice is to begin by learning how colour impacts a space and work in big sections such as this throughout your endeavours.

So you had a barbeque, but were left with hot dog and hamburger buns. Sure you do not want to have them go to waste, but you also do not have any personal desire to eat any more hamburgers or hot dogs. Well here are a few ideas of how to make use of them, and enjoy these bi-products too.

I bet you could look forward to some croutons, bruschetta, or bread pudding. Good thing, because you can use those leftover buns to make any of those delights. And if you have enough of them, you might try out all of them.

To make the croutons, all you are going to need in addition to the buns are unsalted butter, salt and a mixture of whatever dried herbs you have on hand. And because of this no fuss recipe, I have made it my go to leftover bread plan.

Every so often, no matter what the year, I will come across a room decorated completely in sparkling white on the cover of a design magazine. Naturally my first thought is, oh how unrealistic for any woman who has a dog, kids or a husband to actually try this and be able to keep it up. My next assumption is that the space must feel cold, and uninviting. And for adults who visit it with kids, it must create instant fear.

But, recently I saw a few modified versions of the all white room, and have really warmed up to the idea. First off, was an all ivory kitchen, with a dusky grey wood floor and matching stove. It made me think of warmth and the scent of home baked pastries.

Next was a screened in porch, and the crisp white called in the sun like an old friend. The natural light was amazing against the white washed wooden floorboards. And the white slipcovers made the freshly painted wicker furniture look comfy. So, now I have reconsidered my opposition, and knee jerk reaction when I hear about an all white room.
