So you spent all your time looking for living room furniture, and have little free time left to make any improvements to the walls. Don’t let this prohibit you from taking the time you do have available to make some improvement before that new coffee table and sofa are delivered.

Many people think if you can’t paint the walls then there is nothing that can be done to freshen things up. Incorrect, here are two ideas that will make a huge difference, but will take substantially less time than painting all the walls of a living room. First, just paint the trim and window frames in a color that contrasts with the one already on the walls. This will cause the eye to go to the pop of color instead of that on the walls. Not to mention, if you choose wisely, it could alter the whole feel of the room.

The second idea is to paint the ceiling, the place most people forget about. It is unfortunate that more people do not take advantage of this improvement, as it can have a very strong impact, especially if you use a high gloss paint. A glossy white, or a variation on white, will reflect your lighting source in a manner that will be most pleasing. Think of glowy ambient lighting.

Having spent this past week working with a new client on the ways of Feng Shui, I have been harkening back to the time when I first became properly acquainted with the art form myself. I became so enthralled by the possibility of changing the flow of energy that I went further than I had initially intended, well actually a lot further. Luckily for me, and my eagerness there are things like next day delivery sofas, and decorators who are willing to burn the midnight oil. And even better is the fact that all these years later, the decorator and I still work together frequently, and I still sit on that sofa nightly.

It has been my experience since then, that there are two types of people when it comes to Feng Shui, those who want to master it immediately, and those who dabble. Now, I imagine having been the type to want to make changes asap it is only natural that I would be a proponent of this approach. Still, I recognise not everyone has the opportunity to work this way.

However, I must strongly object to this so called dabbling approach. And having put my own preferences, and techniques aside, I can see clearly how this could play out badly. As further support for my opposition, I have spoken to numerous other practitioners, and read articles that confirm the same.

If you do not fully understand Feng Shui and start to alter only certain things you could be impacting the balance of the space you are working on for the worse. So what is the compromise? My advice is to begin by learning how colour impacts a space and work in big sections such as this throughout your endeavours.

I am not entirely sure why it is that we have more than three partially used Johnson’s Baby Oil bottles underneath the bathroom sink, but we do. While it is a handy way to get your skin soft, it will take a really long time to use up that amount of body oil. And my new rule to conserve space in the cabinets of the bathroom is if it is not in use currently, it must go. Obviously, I am not going to throw out perfectly good products, so I am attempting to find new uses for the things that are no longer welcome in the bathroom storage.

Luckily, I found out that baby oil can be used as a chrome polisher, so into the laundry room, with the other house cleaning products the extra two bottle go. This is actually a great find for me, because there was no way I would ever intentionally purchase a product that is only for cleaning chrome, and yet I do like my chrome to be smudge free. To use it as a cleaner of chrome, put a couple drops of the oil on a cotton cloth and smooth over the chrome. It will produce a nice high sheen that you are sure to think is perfect, especially since it comes from a second use category.

Knowing what kind of filling a chair has can be of great use when you are shopping for seats. The choice you make will influence how long it lasts, how it looks, and how pricey it is to buy. Here are the ones that you will most commonly encounter.

Down filling is made of waterfowl feathers. For many it is the best because it produces the greatest level of comfort, and smooths out best. Polyurethane foam should have a density of 1.5 to 1.8 to be any good. If you choose anything under that you can expect there to be air pockets that will make the cushion deflate. And then there is spring down filling, which is made up of a combo of spring coil, polyurethane foam and feathers. This last one is fading out of the scene.

While we often have a large group of guests, including both friends and family, at our home for the holidays, keeping everyone entertained can get difficult. Since we try to avoid switching on the television we tend to rely upon board games. Cluedo and Monopoly have been in the line up in the past, but those limit the number of players, and sometimes feel never ending.

So, this year we bought the games Pass the Bomb and Family Fortunes. Neither was difficult to understand, or teach to a group quickly. Therefore, these two items turned out to be real crowd pleasers. Without them I know there would have been episodes of East Enders on, and the football, neither of which I am a fan of at all. And, plenty of mini conversations with extended relatives, and cousin’s girlfriends would have gone flat, to be clear, probably painfully flat. So, I consider these inexpensive board games to be great things.

Thanks to modern technology I am very accustomed to having access to home goods from the ends of the earth. I have found that this has its upside and its downside. For me it has meant that I have stopped looking for the things I need, or want in my own backyard. This very thing was brought to my attention by my wife, who also recommended that I correct that habit.

I took her recommendation under advisement and found that she was right, again. By just accessing the business directory Leicester I can see what is available locally in the home and garden sector. In fact, it is one of the biggest categories in the directory. Now, whether or not I can get a better deal from any of the businesses listed has yet to be seen, but I am going to give it a try.

I must admit, it does feel good to buy locally and to know that I am supporting the growth of our community. But, if I end up getting a bargain, or better product this way I am not entirely sure that I will be one hundred percent pleased. After all, it will just give my wife one more thing to gloat about.

Her shopping guide, The Good Food Producers Guide 2010, is intended to match the Michelin Guide. It is not only meant to direct food tourists as they travel throughout Britain, but as an everyday working directory for locals.

Rose Prince previously advised us of the wealth of good food in England in her Shop Local columns. During her research for those gems, she accrued valuable information regarding the best to be found from coast to coast. This collection of the best mail order, markets and farm shops will bring great things to your very own kitchen. Quality produce is the crowning touch on a celebrated house.

Prices for sultry designer pantyhose, or simple warm leggings, vary dramatically among retailers. So, this is one item that you might see in one store for a ridiculous amount, and in another for a much more reasonable price.

In addition, many stores will offer deals on their high-end and midrange hosiery that will involve buy one pair get one free. Once you do the math on that bargain, you will see the benefits clearly.
